Scientist. Born in Overpeck, Ohio, he was a seismologist and physicist, noted as the inventor of the Richter magnitude scale which was the device used to measure the size of earthquakes. In 1935, he was a professor at the California Institute of Technology when he developed his Richter Scale to read the logarithm and amplitude of shock waves recorded by earth seismographs. As a result by the 1960s, his device was placed in stations all along the west coast to measure ground fault movements and the magnitude of earthquakes. Richter retired in 1970 and died of heart failure at age 85 in Pasadena, California.
