Abolitionist, Social Reformer. He became famous in the 1830's for his denunciations of slavery. He is best known as the editor of the radical abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator (1831-1865), helping to lead the successful abolitionist campaign against slavery in the United States, and as one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society. He promoted "immediate emancipation" of slaves in the United States.
