Lloyd C Bird was a Virginia State Senator, born in Valley Center, Highland, VA. He was a teacher at the Medical College of Virginia until 1925 when he partnered with Morris Phipps to start Phipps & Bird. This was a business that provided a source of laboratory apparatus, chemicals and other products for scientific education. 1952 and 1953, he was president of Virginia Academy of Science and was elected in 1972 as a "Fellow of the Virginia Academy of Science."
