Actor. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was a brilliant character performer best noted for playing villains in many Warner Bros. films. Paired frequently as Humphrey character's enemy, he had memorable roles in the classic films "Casablanca" (1942), "Key Largo" (1948), "Johnny Belinda" (1948) and "To Have and Have Not" (1952). His many other film credits include "Tiger Fangs" (1943), "Cloak and Dragger" (1946), "The Big Heat" (1953), "Return of the Fly" (1959) and "The Way We Were" (1973). For television, he appeared on "Molle Mystery Theater" and in 7 episodes of "Perry Mason". He died of a stroke at age 78 in Santa Monica, California.
