Abraham graduated from Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College) in 1859 and graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in 1860. he was licensed by the Central Pennsylvania Synod in Duncannon (Perry County). He was ordained by the West Pennsylvania Synod in 1860 or 1861.

He served as the pastor at Centreville (Dickinson post office), Cumberland County, Pennsylvania from 1860 to 1861 and left the ministry in 1865.

He was the editor of the Juniata Sentinel from 1861 to 1865. Afterwards he was the principal of the Soldiers' orphans' School at Cassville from 1865 to 1872. He was the editor of the Huntingdon Globe from 1872 to 1877. He was with the United States Treasury Department from 1879 to 1885.

He married Susan Maria Rindlaud in November 1856. Their children were Adelaide E., Harry T., Annie M., Mary F., Kate G. and Emma G.

At some point he purchased considerable land in Nebraska and had decided to sell some of it when he became ill with pneumonia for about two weeks before his death.

He left his wife and children very comfortably well off.
