Francis Marion was the son of William Franklin and Margaret Brown. He married Anise Caroline Scott in 1863. They were the parents of William Isaac, Vincent, and Eddie, who died in infancy.


JEFFERSON HERALD - Thursday, October 27th, 1938 - Francis M. Franklin, well known merchant and banker of Jefferson is a period of 35 to 50 years ago, died at his home in Hollywood, Cal., last week, and the body was brought to Jefferson for placement in the family vault in the local cemetery.

Funeral services were held at Los Angeles, in the Edwards funeral chapel, last Sunday afternoon, and the body was brought to Jefferson by his wife. Another service was held at the Slininger chapel this (Thursday) afternoon, conducted by Dr. Shenton of the Methodist church of which Mr. Franklin was a former communicant.

Francis M. Franklin, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.I. Franklin, was born in Muscatine, Iowa, March 1, 1846, and passed away in Hollywood, Cal., Friday noon, October 21, 1938. He was 92 years, 7 months and 20 days old.

He came to Franklin township, Greene county, Iowa and was married to Anise Scott in 1863. They established their home in Franklin township on a farm and later moved to Jefferson where he went into the furniture and undertaking business. To them were born three sons, William I. of Olendale, Cal., Vincent, who died in 1898 and Eddie, who passed away in infancy.

Mr. Franklin was one of the organizers of the Jefferson Savings bank and took an active interest in the business and social life of the city. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of the Masonic lodge and the I.O.O.F. lodge in Jefferson. In 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Franklin and their son, William I. and his family went to Denver, Colo., and established a wholesale furniture business. In 1920 the family moved to Los Angeles, Cal., to reside and where they owned a furniture and real estate business.

His wife, Mrs. Anise Franklin, passed away in 1926. Soon after her death he retired from active business and spent much time in traveling and became very active in the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles where he gave much of his time and helped in a financial way at the Temple. There he met and was married to Ava Knowles in 1927.

Mr. Franklin, was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers, James and Lins Franklin and Serilda Robinson.

Surviving are his wife, his son, William I, one sister, Mrs. Viola Roberts of Orchards, Wash., four grandchildren, Mrs. Marlon Smith, Mrs. Irene Edgecomb, Mrs. Corrine Patten and William B. Franklin, five great-grandchildren, Mrs. Robert Wheeler, LeRoy Smith, and Glen, Beverly, and Edward Edgecomb, besides other relatives and many friends.

He engaged in his present business June 28, 1875, succeeding Henry Bowman. It was the first establishment of the kind in Jefferson. He had both a jobbing and a wholesale trade.

Mr. Franklin is a son of one of the pioneers of Green County. His father, William A. Franklin, settled on section 123, in what is now Franklin Township in 1855. He was the third settler in the township, which was named in honor of himself. He was a native of North Carolina, and when a boy removed with his parents to South Carolina, thence to the State of Indiana, where he married Margaret Brown. Soon after his marriage, about 1844, he removed to Muscatine County, this state, where he entered several hundred acres of land, and resided there until he came to Greene County April 28, 1855.

Mr. and Mrs. William A. Franklin had eight children, three of whom died young. Mrs. Serilda Robinson died, leaving a family. The surviving children are James B., a farmer of Franklin Township, William L, who resides on the homestead where the mother still lives; Francis M. and Sarah V. The latter is the wife of F.L. Robertson and lives in Oregon.

Our subject, Francis Marion, was born in Muscatine, Iowa 1846. He married Anise Caroline Scott, a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Scott, who was born in Indiana, where her father died. Her mother, with two sons and four daughters came to Iowa when Mrs. Franklin was a child. The eldest daughter, Nancy, was killed by the kick of a horse while the family were enroute to Iowa. Mrs Franklin is the only child left in Green County.

Mr. and Mrs Franklin have two sons - William Isaac and Vincent V. Eddie W. died in infancy. Mr. Franklin's parents were very highly esteemed in their community, and though the father long since passed away, the remembrance of him still survives. His aged wife is still left, a worthy representative of that grand old pioneer element that is fast passing away.
