Stephen Alexander Juhan was born in 1765 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of John James Juhan and Mary Payzant Juhan. During his childhood he lived with his parents in Halifax, Boston, and Charleston. When he was 18 years old, he moved to Philadelphia to begin his career as a talented young musician. He studied Violin and performed as a Solo violinist. For a period of time he was recognized in the city as a Professor of Music, violin and pianoforte; Concert Artist, solo violinist and pianoforte; Conductor of the Orchestra, and of Benefit and Subscription Concerts. Stephen taught music and one of his pupils, Elizabeth (Eliza) Martin Bourdeaux, later became his wife.

He obtained great wealth in land in Barnwell District, South Carolina, but due to poor management, all was lost to creditors. The acreage that he owned is now owned by the Federal Government. Known as the "Savannah River Plant" it is closed to the public. His military service record includes: "1786 Philadelphia, 3rd Co, 2nd Battalion, Phila. Militia, Commanded by Lt. Col. James Read, Esq and Capt. Samuel McLane; Also the War of 1812, 23rd Regiment, South Carolina Militia." On 1 Sep 1816 Eliza died at her plantation home and is buried in the Circular Church Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina.
