Gus A. Witzke was born at Hammond, Minnesota, April 19, 1895, the son of August and Pauline (Tesmer) Witzke. As a child, he was baptized in the Lutheran church and later reaffirmed his faith in confirmation.
He received his early education in the Hammond school and continued a year in the Lutheran school in New Ulm, Minnesota.
Upon the death of his father in 1911, he and his mother and three sisters moved to Avoca. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1917 and served two years as a radio technician, with considerable overseas duty.
September 5, 1924, he was married to Bertha Hunke in Atwood, Kansas. They maintained homes in various places where Gus worked as a meat salesman and meat cutter. They moved from Denver for health reasons and spent 2 years in Syracuse before moving to Lincoln in 1974. He was stricken with a heart attack and died in the Lincoln General hospital Dec. 29, 1975.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha, of Lincoln; and two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Ida) Ranfrang [sic] of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs. M.C. (Esther) Pittman of Avoca; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and five sisters.
Funeral services were held January 2, 10:30 a.m. at the Dorr-Colbert Funeral Home, Weeping Water. Pastor Douglas Zurek officiated. Mrs. Leonard Nutzman, organist, played organ interludes: "Just As I Am" and "Rock of Ages."
Pallbearers were Merle Rodgers, Joseph Olewine, Robert Nielsen, Robert Iverson, John Nutzman and Kenneth Price.
Interment was at the Avoca Cemetery.
