Quakers did not have grave markers with their names on it. As Samuel was disowned by the Church, he was given an engraved headstone.

This was a Quaker family, after Penninah died Samuel married Mary Beaman. On The Oct. 29, 1808 monthly meeting record states Samuel Newby is disowned for marrying out of unity.

Departed this life, in Washington county, Indiana, on the 14th day of January last, my dear father Samuel Nuby. He was born in Randolph county, North Carolina, March 16, 1776, and came to this State in 1814. In his youth he was a member of the Society of Friends, but in 1817 he joined the Dunkard church, but subsequently he united with the Christian church at Mill Creek, in which he was a member when he died. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."
