Thomas served as a Private with the 9th Delaware Regiment, Company E during the Civil War. The 9th was organized at Wilmington, Delaware on August 30, 1864 and immediately assigned the duty of guarding prisoners at Fort Delaware. Thomas died in service on November 18, 1864. While the exact cause is unknown, it is believed that he 'died of disease.'

"Most casualties and deaths in the Civil War were the result of non-combat-related disease. For every three soldiers killed in battle, five more died of disease. The primitive nature of Civil War era medicine meant that many wounds and illnesses were unnecessarily fatal. " [American Battlefield Trust]
