Tom Davis was the son of legendary Revolutionary War soldier William Davis and Maria Phroene "Frankie" Carpenter of Wilkes and Burke Counties in NC. When a young man, in the early 1830's, he and his wife Arabella Marilla Burchfield (daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Hill Burchfield who moved to Cades Cove, TN from NC) moved to Cades Cove from the Linville Falls area. After a few years, between 1844 and 1849, they moved to the section of Cherokee County, NC which is now Graham County. They raised a family of nine children. His wife was called "Arbila" and she is buried in the Calderwood Cemetery in Blount County, TN.

The children were William who married Susan___, Louisa Elizabeth who married John Aaron Hyde of NC, Nancy Evaline who married Samuel Burchfield of Cades Cove, Jacob who married Sarah Ann____, John Robert who married Anna Starkey, Frances Jane who married William Langley Farley, Burton Albert who married Althea Pauline Ditmore, Amanda, and George Washington who first married Amanda Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jackson, and second married Roxanna Adams.
