SHREVE -- Russell A Berry, 96, a life long farmer in the Shreve area, passed away at his home Tuesday, April 15, 2014, after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Shreve Christian Church (D.O.C.), with the Rev. Priscilla E. Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Schlabach Funeral Home in Shreve, where a Masonic service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the services at the church.

Russell was born June 29, 1917, in Shreve to Thomas and Bessie (Alleman) Berry and married Vera P. Porter June 8, 1940. She preceded him Dec. 18, 1999.

Russell, along with his parents and brother, operated Locust Lane Dairy from their farm north of Shreve for a number of years. Along with his wife, he was owner/operator of Berry Locker Plant in Shreve for 24 years.

He was a member, past deacon, and elder of Shreve Christian Church (D.O.C.). He was a 72-year member and past master of Shreve Garfield Masonic Lodge No. 528 FA&M and was a 50-year member of Shreve Chapter No. 496 Order of Eastern Star.

Russell enjoyed playing croquet with local townsmen on sand courts in the Wayne County area. He will be especially remembered for growing apples and sharing the fruit with family and friends.

Surviving are children, Margaret (Rex) Riley of Loudonville, Lynn Smallstey of Mansfield, Joel (Doranna) Berry and Jack (Judy) Berry, both of Shreve; grandchildren, Kerry (Tony) Greer, Megen (James) Cho, Scott (Ashley) Berry, Tina (Paul) Martin, Jessica (Steven) Hammond, Kimberly (Justin) Herald, and Jason Berry; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Greer, David Cho, Maria Cho, and Jaice Herald; a sister, Janet Coleman of Wooster; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Berry; and a sister, Jean Luft.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Shreve Christian Church, P.O. Box 606, Shreve 44676; or LifeCare Hospice, 2525 Back Orrville Road, Wooster 44676.
