Frank A. Lumsden was the son of Alex & Lucy (Tunstall) Lumsden. He served as a cavalryman in the Confederate States Army until being disabled, by a shot through his lungs, at the battle of Blakely, Alabama. He married the daughter of Confederate General Earl Van Dorn, and they had two daughters and one son.
