Mrs. Joanna Newell, wife of Governor Newell died yesterday morning in this city after a protracted illness. Her disease was a complication of abdominal and nervous disorders which gradually undermined her health so that for years past she has been unable to attend to social or household duties. A few years ago she had the misfortune to fracture her leg at the hip joint which greatly increased her disability and confined her to the house. Having improved somewhat she traveled recently to the eastern states where she spent several months and came back somewhat improved but she soon relapsed and after a week of severe and painful illness she failed to rally and yesterday passed peacefully to her long home.

Mrs. Newell was a daughter of Dr. Wm. Van Deursen of New Brunswick, New Jersey, who was one of the most distinguished physicians of his generation, being an associate of the members of the profession in New York city where he practiced. He was surgeon in the United States army in the war of 1812.

Mrs. Newell was educated at the best seminaries of New York and New Jersey. In 1848 she was married to Hon. W. A. Newell, then a member of congress from New Jersey; representing the Trenton, Princeton and Monmouth district. They had five children, three sons and two daughters. Two of the sons were educated in the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania but died in the early years of manhood. One of the daughters was married to Judge Mason Irwin of this state but died after a short period of married life. The eldest daughter is still living and is the wife of Lieut. J. N. Jordan, U.S. Navy, who is now at Newport, Rhode Island.

Mrs. Newell was a woman of active intellect and was thoroughly educated. She was a warm hearted, liberal minded lady and was popular to an extraordinary degree where ever she was known. The people of Olympia were greatly attached to her and are grieved at her departure. The tenderest sympathies of our citizens are tendered to her distinguished husband and who mourns the loss of a most excellent and loving companion.
