Per his obituary, Stuart was born and raised in San Francisco, graduating from University of California. He was a reporter at the SF Chronicle from 1910 to 1917 until he enlisted in the US Army during World War I. After the war, he was employed by the SF News until 1925 when he left to work in the publicity business. In late 1940 he returned to the newspaper field, this time in Placer County, starting the Sierra Sentinel, a winter sports and recreational weekly tabloid. Stuart succumbed to a sudden heart attack and was survived by his wife Allis, daughter Janet, and a son in Honolulu.
