"OBITUARY

PORTERS - Harrisburg, on Saturday, June 12th, 1880 at 10 a.m., James A. Porter - aged 54 years, 2 months, and 12 days.

Mr. Porter was a Virginia, born in Russell county, May 1, 1816, where he resided until his 18th year, when, with his parents he moved into Boone county, Indiana. Here he met Miss Nancy Knott, to whom he was married in 1838.

He remained in Indian for about twenty years, when hearing of resources and wealth of the Pacific States, he joined the flood of emigration then traveling westward. In the fall of 1852 he arrived in Missouri on his way to Oregon, which latter place he reached late in 1853, and settled on his homestead in Linn county. Shortly after making Oregon his home.

The Indians became troublesome, and it being necessary for the protection of settlers to organize some kind of defense, he, with his accustomed determination, joined Capt. Keeney's company of Volunteers and served in the capacity or Orderly Sergeant during the war of 1855. After hostilities had ceased he returned to his new home, where he led a quiet and contented though industrious life; ever careful of the interests and welfare of those by whom he was surrounded.

When this country became more densely populated he was alive to the importance of a political organization, and being a staunch believer in the principles of Democracy, he contributed extensively to, and was one of the original stockholder of the Democrat, when first published by Hon. Delazon Smith.

In 1868 he suffered the loss of his wife, and being a man of strong family ties, the shock was so severe and the loss so irreparable that he never entirely regained his former cheerfulness.

The disease which terminated so fatally was the asthmatic consumption, from which he had experienced intense suffering with patience and resignation for many months past.

In conversation with his family and friends Mr. Porter manifested strong faith in a future reward and arranged all his affairs with care and precision, and frequently expressed himself fully prepared and waiting the to him welcome call from a world of pain to one of eternal rest.

His life was characterized by that simplicity and an honesty of purpose peculiar to himself, and which won him many warm friends; he was esteemed by all, and most by those who knew him best, and were aware of his sterling worth.

In his death the county lost one of her first settlers and a valuable citizen; those intimate with him a true and tried friend: and his family consisting of W.H. Porter, of Eastern Oregon, Mrs. J.F. and Mrs. Jno. M. McCartney, of Harrisburg, Hon. Thos. L. and J.C. Porter, of Halsey, and Miss Elba Porter a kind and loving parent, who in their bereavement have the warmest sympathy of the whole community.

The funeral was one of the largest ever witnessed in this vicinity. The burial services were performed by the Rev. Joseph Pearl at the Pine Grove cemetery, where the remains were laid tenderly to rest beside those of his wife."
