GEORGE A. GORDON
George A. Gordon, 80, a lifelong resident of Amherst, died FRiday at Community Health Partners in Lorain after a short illness.
Born in Brownhelm Township, he was a 1939 graduate of Amherst High School.
During World War WW, he served in the Navy aboard U.S.S. Savannah on the Mediterranean Sea.
From 1945 to 1979, he was superintendent of Amherst Utilities Department. He also was a volunteer fireman for Amherst Fire Department from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Mr. Gordon was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troup 422 in Amherst from 1963 to 1972.
He was member of St. Peter United Church of Christ and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1662, both in Amherst.
He and his wife of 60 years, Marjorie E. (nee Krieg), traveled to all 48 continental United States.
Mr. Gordon enjoyed stained glass, gardening and doing handyman work.
Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Peggy Gawelek of Berea, a son, Bruce of Chagrin Falls; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jamie Gawelek; his parents, Henry and Anna (nee Albrecht) Gordon; and a sister, Jean Donnelly.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Ave., Amherst, where services will be 1 p.m. Monday.
The Rev. Gil Fauber, of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst, will officiate.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Amherst. Military honors will be conducted by members of Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
