Martha Ann Bates, the daughter of David Bates and Rebecca Johnson, (both parents born in Indiana)was born Jan. 21, 1849 and died Aug. 20, 1925. She was from Clay County. She married Dr. Samuel Canby. Martha's death record is on file in Olney, Richland County, IL. The 1900 Census shows she had given birth to eight children, four of whom were then living. The other four children died young and are buried in the Richland Cemetery west of Calhoun. They were Eunice M., 1883-1889, Nellie E. 1874-May 31, 1877, Nellie E. June 8, 1877-1879, age 1year 8 months 1 day; and Sybil P. 1879-1879

Mrs. S.S. Canby died at Olney Sanitarium Thursday of last week. After nearly three week's illness of paralysis. She was past 76 years of age.

She leaves four children; Mrs. D.W. Bowers of Berryville, Mrs. James McVaigh of near here, Mrs. Josie Kimmel of Polk County and one son, Richard Canby of McLean County.

Funeral services held Saturday at the Church of the Brethren. Burial in the nearby cemetery.
