Samuel S. Canby was a physician who served the surrounding area for a number of years. He was born June 27, 1848 in Logan County, OH, a son of Richard Sprigg Canby and Eliza Simpson. Samuel's father Richard Sprigg Canby was a county judge in Olney and also served in some nearby counties. Samuel S. Canby was one of ten children. Among the ten were; Elizabeth; Lydia Ann who married T. W. Hutchinson, a lawyer in Olney; Oliver S., a lawyer in Edwards county; Samuel, who died in infancy; a second Samuel, the one buried here; Cornelia married Dr. Boyles of Clay City and Benjamin, a city Judge of E. St. Louis.

Samuel S. Canby came to Olney in 1863 and began the study of medicine with Drs. French & Lemen. In 1869 he began practicing medicine. In 1876 he went to St. Louis to attend Missouri Medical College, graduating in 1878.

In the 1880 Census of Richland County, the family of Samuel S. Canby is shown in Fairview (now Calhoun), Madison Township. Later the Canbys moved to Bonpas Township, where Dr. Canby built a large home about a mile north of Red Head School The house was built to accommodate his family and perhaps some patients who needed extra attention.
