Helen was the 4th of 9 children raised on a 200 acre dry wheat farm just north of Lehigh Montana where she went to grade school. In the winter months the Koval and some neighbor children would form a line big to small breaking the snow drifts and walking over a burning coal slack pile to get to school a mile and half away. Helen remembered hold on to her older brother Andy's coat tails. She went to school in Windham Montana, played on the Girls Basketball team, jumping center though she was the shortest on the team.
