The Star-Herald, October 23, 2007:

Mrs. Arrhetta Ray Chipman, 100, died Oct. 19, 2007 and had a very full life. Born in Brilliant, Ala., April 2, 1907 to John Pinkard Ray and Julia Crow Ray, most of her childhood was spent in Ethel where she lost her right arm at the age of 11. Not letting that slow her down, she played basketball in high school and married Gayle Chipman in 1927. Their only child, Bill, was born a year later.

Arhetta was an avid gardener her whole life. The Washington County Home for the Aged was one of her pet projects. She kept it lovely for years. Active in the garden club, she was sent to Washington D.C. to represent Greenville in receiving the Cleanest Town in the U.S. Award once in the 1960s. Ever active, Mrs. Chipman mowed her own yard until she was 86 and drove her car until she was 92.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Gayle Chipman Sr. and her son William Gayle Chipman Jr.

She left behind her daughter-in-law Mary Gibbs Chipman; grandchildren William Gayle Chipman III of Greenville and Sarah Ellen Parish of Ethel; great-grandchildren Elisabeth Chipman Kibler of Jacksonville, Fla., Sarah Emily Parish of Franklin, Tenn., and Hannah Gayle Parish, George Isaac Nelson Parish, and William Judah Keith Parish all of Ethel. Mrs. Chipman also leaves her sister-in-law Mrs. Billie Burns, her niece Beverly Chuning and her nephew Wade Burns.

The funeral will be lead by Phil Wilkerson at Mortimer Funeral Home of Greenville Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. and a graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens following the funeral.
