John Mitchel Thomas, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, at home following a long illness. He was born in Baldwin and had moved to the Fruitland area in the 1950s, where he ran a barber shop in Crescent City for many years. Later he moved his business to Fruitland and ran it there until illness forced him to retire. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Fruitland. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Thomas of Interlachen; son, Greg Thomas and wife Linda of Seville; daughters, Debra Lee and husband Ronald of Folkston, Ga., Naomi Wechter and husband Mike of Interlachen; sisters, Mary Lee of Parson, Utah, Hattie Mae Monds of High Springs, Lorayne Rhodon and Lillian Debose, both of MacCleny, Olabelle Burnett of Middleburg; nine grand-children, one great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral is 3 p.m. Friday at Beulah Church in Fruitland with Rev. Ira Raney and Rev. Ron Starley officiating. Burial will follow in the Beulah Church Cemetery.
