Clarence Giego was a member of Charlie Company, First Battalion, 46th Infantry, 198th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. He is honored here by the veterans of 1/46th.

The 1/46 came in-country by ship on October 4, 1967 as part of the 198th Light Infantry Brigade. The 198th became part of the Americal Division. After one month of orientation at Duc Pho, the battalion was deployed north of Chu Lai and patrolled from Hill 54, Hill 69 and LZ Baldy in Quang Tin Province.

Army PFC Clarence Griego, 19, 431 Barstow Road was killed in Vietnam, February 1, when struck by a metal fragment from an American Claymore Mine which accidentally exploded.

He was serving with the 198th light infantry brigade stationed between Chu Lui and Hue.

Griego entered the service in June of 1967 and received his basic training at Ft Ord. He then underwent advanced combat training at Ft Polk, LA and was sent to Vietnam November 23 of last year.

He was born in New Mexico but had been a resident of Barstow for the past 18 years. A 1966 graduate of Barstow High School, Griego was a member of the varsity football and track teams and the Riffian Choir. Prior to entering the service, he was employed at Denny's Coffee Shop.

Griego is survived by his wife, Linda Duarte Griego, Barstow who is expecting the couple's first child.

Other survivors include his parents, Mr and Mrs Maxsimo Griego, 701 Frances Drive, Barstow; two brothers, Robert, San Diego and Richard, Barstow; two sisters, Marie and Alice, Barstow; maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Manuel Maestas and paternal grandfather, Manuel Griego, all of Albuquerque, NM.

Services are pending at Mead's Mortuary.

Rosary will be recited for him Sunday evening at 8:30 pm in Mead's Mortuary Chapel, Barstow. Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 9 am in St Joseph's Catholic Church, with the Rev Charles P Young, officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow in Mt View Cemetery, Barstow. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 pm Sunday at Mead's.
