Death of L.B. Winder, of Nappanee.

Lewis B. Winder, so well-known here and in this county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jacob Pippenger in Locke last Sunday night at 10:30, after a protracted illness of several months during which time it was necessary to remove him from Nappanee to the home of his daughter.

The funeral will be held at the home of Trustee and Mrs. Jacob Pippenger in Locke this Wednesday afternoon at 1:30, and the interment will be made by N.A. Lehman at South Union.

Deceased was born in Bloomfield township, Crawford county, Penn., April 26, 1825, and was the eldest in a family of eight children. He went to Portage county, Ohio, at an early age with his parents, who subsequently died there. Mr. Winder came to Indiana in January 1865, and purchased land in Locke township which he still owned at the time of his death. The once prosperous village of Lock, which he assisted in plotting, was partly located on his farm, but which disappeared with the locating of Nappanee, most of the business men coming here, Mr. Winder, subsequently, being one of that number. He was owner of the Nappanee House, the town's only hotel for a great many years. He continued as its landlord off and on up to a few years ago when his health began to fail him. Previous to operating a hotel here, he conducted a star route mail service between Goshen and Nappanee and the intervening villages.

His first wife, who died in Locke, Aug. 22d, 1874, was Miss Sarah A. Walker to whom he was married Sept. 14th, 1848. To this union two children were born, Malissa and Emma. The former died when quite young, and Emma is the wife of Trustee Jacob Pippenger. He was again married to Mary A. Berlin, daughter of John D. and Susan (Hofman) Berlin, who survives. The deceased was an industrious, and highly respected citizen, and had accumulated considerable property. He owned several properties in Nappanee besides his hotel and farm in Locke township.
