Notes from E.S. Martin research, 1957:

Otto's sister, Clara, says in a letter of 3/27/1955, "I forgot to write of your Uncle Otto. He was the youngest son. When he was born we lived on a farm and raised geese. When he saw his baby sister Maude, he said 'It's a doose egg- a Dander laid him'. At that time our folks had bought a farm and were trying to pay for it. By that time there were seven in the family. There was a depression on then, for our country had been at war and depression always follows war. Farm labor was poorly paid. Father, though a slight man, was a school teacher in winter when a man could manage unruly boys, and in summer cradled grain all day for 75 cents. Yes! Not an hour, but a day! Always there was a dream of a new house. It was to be built on an elevated place on the farm. Father even set out fruit trees to be coming on. Time went on and there was opportunity to sell that farm and buy a larger one, another farm that also needed a new house. It was a fortunate buy. The sod was virgin soil. It had always been pastured and it was as rich as country cream. The folks prospered mightily. The time had now arrived to send the two- Otto and Maude- to college. While there, they contracted Mumps. Otto never fully recovered. The following fall he joined the Silent Majority. It was a terrible blow to the family. He was a devout Christian. He sang bass in the choir. On Sunday he hitched a lively horse to a shiny buggy and took Mother to church."

His sister, Maude, says: (3/24/1956) "Otto loved farming- he and I attended Normal School in Terre Haute - he took the Measels and died in August of 1895. He was a great Christian and when he passed away we thought he didn't know anything, but he sat up and sang in a clear voice,
O Happy Day, O Happy day
When Jesus washed my sins away
He taught me how to work and pray
And live rejoicing every day
Happy day! Happy day!
When Jesus washed my sins away.
He passed away at the age of twenty. He and I were pals."
