Dr. Walter Shepherd Barge, 74, emeritus professor of history at Campbell University, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at his home in Buies Creek, after a brief illness.

He was born in Durham in 1934, the son of the late Thomas Henry Barge and Mary Lake Barge.

Dr. Barge pursued a professional life of both academics and military service. He began his education in the Durham city schools system. In June 1957 he earned a bachelor's degree in history from Wake Forest College, at which time he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Dr. Barge proudly served his country, with tours in Korea and Vietnam. For his distinguished service to the U.S. Army and the Republic of Vietnam, he was awarded two U.S. Bronze Stars and the Vietnamese Police Honor Medal, 2nd Class. When Dr. Barge retired from the Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1979, he was awarded the Legion of Merit for his exemplary military career.

In 1965, selected by the army to pursue graduate studies, he received a master's degree in European history from Columbia University. In 1982, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. After teaching nine years in the history department of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., Dr. Barge continued his academic service in civilian life, as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Campbell University. He was an administrator for 17 years before retiring in 2001. His numerous contributions during his tenure as dean include directing the university's self-study for reaffirmation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1990 and 2000.

In addition, he created Campbell's Academic Honors Program, and recently was recognized for establishing the Walter S. Barge Honors Colloquium student lecture series. He also served on the history faculty and the honors faculty.
