On February 6, 1909, Clay married Clara Mabel Reynard in Jay County, Indiana. Six daughters and one son were born to the couple: Ada Belle [Jones], Helen Inez [Barga], Virginia Ruth Liggett, Bessie Lucille [Barga], Edna M. [Mills], Robert H, and Wavalene A. [Johnson].
Clay was a farmer for most of his life. He and his wife Clara also bought a small store in Rose Hill, Ohio, in about 1939. Clay died on November 24, 1962, in Darke County, Ohio.
