Prelate of the Church of England, Abolitionist. He was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, where he became a fellow in 1752. He was ordained in 1757. He won the Seatonian Prize for his poem Death (1759), which includes the familiar line, "War its thousands slays, Peace, its ten thousands." He served as chaplain to King George III, from 1769, and as Rector of Lambeth, 1767 to 1777. In 1776, he was appointed Bishop of Chester, as which he served from 1777 to 1787. He was translated to Bishop of London, as which he served from 1787 until his death in 1809. He is noted for having been a strong advocate--and the foremost among the Anglican hierarchy--for the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire.
