Mr. Thayer was born at Philadelphia, October 4, 1836, the son of Martin Thayer and Mary Jane Borland. He entered from the Episcopal Academy in 1853 and left at the close of the junior year. He was a member of the Delta Phi Fraternity. He afterwards studied law in the office of Judge M. Russell Thayer, 1840 C, 1894 LL.D. Mr. Thayer married in 1859 Miss Mary Randolph, daughter of George Wm. Chapman, Lieutenant U. S. N., Class of 1833 College, by whom he had five sons all of whom attended the University of Pennsylvania. They are: Geo. Chapman, '81 C, John Borland, Jr., '82 C, Sydney, '86 C, Harry Chapman, '92 C, and Walter, '97 C.
