Emigrated to America in 1856 on ship "Thornton" with sister Emma Summers. Was a member of the Hunt and Hodgett wagon companies. Edwin Summers was one of 20 men to volunteer to stay at the fort at Martin's Cove for the winter, guarding the freight and possessions of those who were rescued of the Willie and Martin handcart companies. Edwin's sister Emma Summers was a member of the Willie company and his brother George Summers was a member of the rescue party.

Married Elizabeth Hodges in Smithfield, Cache county, Utah in 1862. Elizabeth is the sister of Emma Hodges, wife of Edwin's brother George.
