Peter Benton Lawlis was the son of Samuel Donnel & Maggie (Butler) Lawlis. He married Mae and they had three sons, Roger, Ron, and Leon.

Peter was a US Army veteran and crane operator for Colorado Fuel & Iron Corporation. One of his hobbies was baking, entering 4 cakes in the 1964 State Fair in Chicago, taking 3 Blue ribbons for his Deluxe Chocolate, German Chocolate, and White Silver King cakes and one Red ribbon for his yellow butternut cake. Peter never used recipes, he baked "his way". He baked the winning cakes one morning after working all night the night before operating a Crane.
