Ed Shomaker Loses Life While Hunting
Ed Shanaker, a well known young man about 28 years of age, who has been working in the logging camps about here for the past several years, was drowned Sunday in the Palix river near Eli Rockey's camp. He took his gun from the bunk house and went down to the river bank about 100 yards from the house, and shot some kind of water bird which fell in the river.
The last seen of him before the accident he was trying to pull the bird ashore with a long fishing pole. Shortly after, the men in the house heard a noise outside as of someone shouting but, as such noises are common about a camp, no attention was paid to it. A few seconds later, however, the same noise was heard again and Con Egan went to the door just in season to see Shanaker struggling in the river.
Followed by the others, Eagan rushed to the river, but only to see Shanaker go down for the last time. It is thought that he slipped in while trying to secure the bird and, being unable to swim, met his death as above related.
The body was easily recovered and brought to this city Monday morning. The funeral occurred on Tuesday at Bay Center , and the remains were interred in Bay Center cemetery.
Mr. Shanaker leaves a brother, residing in Salt Lake City , and a little son, five years of age, living with his mother at Ilwaco, the parents having separated.
