James was the son of John Cunningham Goodner & Susannah Smith. He married (1)Elizabeth Jane Logan on 04 August 1853 in Montgomery Co., AR and they had eight children. Elizabeth died in 1877. James then married (2)Susan Shirley on 01 March 1878 in Montgomery Co., AR and they had two children.
