Daniel was one of the first pioneers in area & to help set up the first roads in central Indiana.

Was the oldest settler of Tipton County, Ind. age 92. Died at his home near New Lancaster. He settled among the first white men in Indiana. Assisted in opening up the first roads laid out in central Indiana. [post special service 1896 January Elwood Indiana].

Daniel own a farm that was a mile West/SW of village of New Lancaster Ind & near straight with Cook [New Lancaster] Cemetery. His original home has been demolished & just farm ground now.
Still in descendants hands from Daniel dau Mary Van Ness-Juday lineage.

They were my gg grandfather Daniel half bro/sis..
Some of the children were born in area of Dillburg,PA, York Co.PA; and Ohio.

The Van Nest[s] sons that went with Abigail to Butler County Ohio in circa 1806,thought their father was dead.

John W. had not seen his sons for nearly 35 years. When the sons knew their father was a live, two of the sons-Joseph and Elijah went to visit their father John W. Van Neste/Van Nest in Moreland, Ohio. John W. urged family to use Van Nest as Van Ness. Daniel [my line],Joseph, Elijah, Furman all decline & used Van Ness as their mother Abigail wanted.

Jan. 29, 1896
Daniel Vanness, one of the old land marks of this section of the state, died this morning at 9 o'clock at the residence of his son-in-law, Henry Judy one and a half miles south west of New Lancaster. General debility is give as the cause of his death. Mr. Vanness was with in about five months of being ninety-three years of age and was well and favorably known through out this part of the state. He has been blind for the past nine years. He has benn sick for several weeks and his demise today has not been unexpected. He leaves several children among them being Charley Vanness, a membr of the Elwood fire department. The funeral will take place at one of the city --?-- Friday at 2:30 o'clock followed with interment. In the city cemetery. The bereived relatives have the ---

Letters written by John W. to son Elijah, Millbrook, On-Nov 2, 1855: Writes of separation of himself & Abigail his wife. Blamed the Grandmother Warne for the trouble with his wife. John W. son [2nd marriage] John who was Justice of Peace & Postmaster for many years in Ohio.

Extracts of letter written by John W. Van Nest to son Elijah: Writes of death of his only brother, Rev. Peter Van Ness, on Oct 17th last., in his 93 year. Was a ministry 54 years. John W. was 17 years younger than brother Peter. Had one sister [Note: Anna/Anne b. 1768; John W. born 1774]living who was 83 yrs old. John W. was the youngest of his family. Writes of living in New Jersey when his wife left him. [note: Abigail Warne Van Nest].
Note: John W. brother, Peter b. 1757 d.Oct 17, 1850. [Rev] & father Jan [John] Van Nest[e]m. Sarah Bodine died in Revolutionary War. Poss. born 1736.

Extracts of Letters: 2013 new story on our name.
Letter give that the "Van Nest" name was changed to "Van Ness", due to: we know how young children tease & make fun of other children in school--it is said that children made fun of Van Nest name at the boys; and that's when it changed to Van Ness. Children called them "Chicken Nest". John W. after reunited with his son; urge them to use Van Nest as it was to be spelled then; but the sons refused & restricted their children [John W. grandchildren] to write name Van Nest & Only use Van Ness. As it is today for the family.

NOTE: 2 stories on our name, one from Butler Co elder family or the one above. Most family I know of had used the one from Butler Co OH.; that Abigail changed the spelling to what we use today to make it so John W. couldn't locate her & the Van Nest/Van Ness boys in Ohio.

Family descents back to pioneer Pieter Pieterzen Van Neste/Van Nest/Van Ness. Pieter Pietersen Van Nest was born circa 1625 in Nes, Ameland Island, Friesland, the Netherlands (The Van Neste family was originally from the Netherlands).
"PETER PIETERSE VAN NEST immigrated from Utrecht, Holland, in 1647, to New Amsterdam {Brooklyn, Kings County, New York},He married Judith Joris Rapalje, daughter of Joris Jansen Rapalje and Catalyntje Jeronomus Trico, in 1652 in Kings County, New York. He died on 20 Mar 1697 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. Judith died in Raritan/Somerville NJ Somerset Co NJ area; possible burial Old Dutch Cemetery/The Kirk,means church & Peter P. VN. Peter was buried in old Dutch church cemetery Brooklyn. NY removed many old church burial grounds to Green Wood Cem in Brooklyn as the city grew. Peter was to been buried in mass grave area. Researching area with cousin Scott VN in 2013/14, give area of Cedar Dell, near lot 44602. No marker or known exact plot. Reformed Dutch Church purchased its plot in Greenwood Cemetery known as Cedar Dell.
Pieter Pieterson [s/o Peter/Pieter]is Van Neste ancestor that emigrated 1647 from Netherlands. Nes, one of 3 villages on the island of Ameland, off Friesland family states they were from. Researching Netherlands for more on Peter P. Van Neste Family.


Nes, one of three villages on the island of Ameland, off Friesland, between which province and the island lies De walden Sound....In 1683, the family removed to New Jersey, and were the first Europeans to settle in Somerset Colony. The family Bible was printed in Leyden in 1645 by Pieter.

Daniel & first wife Barbara Shilling had son [Rev. Furman of Atlanta Indiana] Furman.
Story:
Barbara Shilling/Sheller & her husband Daniel with their young baby son Furman had been to the home of a neighbor & were returning when the accident occurred. The wife was on a horse & Daniel was walking beside the horse. Barbara just handled baby Furman to Daniel & he was carrying their infant son. In passing through a wood- a tree fell crushing the young Barbara & her horse. The babe who survived was Elder 'Rev' Furman Van Ness, a pioneer preacher of Tipton County & noted character. His death occurred in 1899 at age 77 & he with his wife Deborah are buried in the Sumner cemetery South of Tipton near Atlanta Indiana.
Daniel then Barbara sister Susannah Shilling and had more children. She died in Butler Co Ohio also-Indian Creek Pioneer Cemetery where Daniel mother Abigail Warne-Van Nest-Wilkinson is buried & other family members.
His 3rd marriage to Mary E. Crisman/Crissman is my ancestor lineage
