John was the son of John Cushing and Silence Vining, and the grandson of Adam Cushing and Sarah Reed, Thomas Vining and Hannah Randall.

John married Elizabeth Goodwin, the daughter of Samuel Goodwin and Elizabeth Libby, both of Maine. They were married 28 Jan 1791 in Durham and had twelve children, all born in Durham:
