Sylvanus married his second wife, Susan E. Ayers Smith on 7 June 1899 in Vermont. Susan, of Claremont, New Hampshire, the daughter of Stephen March Ayers and Charlotte Emerson.

The 1900 U. S. Census recorded Sylvanus (69) and Susan (53) living in Moretown, Washington County, Vermont as well as Charlotte Smith (14) Susan's daughter from first marriage and Frank Keyes, Sylvanus's son from first marriage. Sylvanus (79) and Susan (62) were still recorded in Moretown by the 1910 Census on 26 April, before his death in November.
