Mark Wilbur Hightower, 47, of 166 W. Fourth St. died Monday, June 08, 2009 in the Brethren Care Village after a brief illness.

Mark was born November 27, 1961 to Woody and Pat Hoke Hightower in Mansfield. He was a 1980 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, attended Kent State, University of Cincinnati, and receiving his bachelors degree in business from Wright State University in Dayton. While in college Mark enlisted in the Army National Guard after graduating he enlisted in the Air Force. During his 12 years of service to his country, Mark received the honor of being named the Airman of the Year Award becoming the first African American to receive this honor with the selection coming from not only airman who are stateside but also overseas. After the service he lived in Colorado and Georgia before returning to Mansfield 3 years ago. Mark was a member of the Abundant Life Tabernacle Church, employed with the Richland County Public Library, and had been accepted into an accelerated nursing program in Cleveland that he was to have started this past September until his illness. He enjoyed helping people and volunteering his time for a good cause.

In addition to his parents, Mark is survived by one sister, Kimberly Hightower of Cincinnati; one brother, Gary (Deborah) Hightower of Hoschton, Georgia; five nieces and nephews, Tamika Bonner of Monroe, Georgia, Micah, Keith, and Brittiany Hightower all of Deluth, Georgia, and Christianna Hightower-Ware of Cincinnati; two special friends, Cheryl Canada of Mansfield, and Tony Lehman of Cleveland; and a host of Family and Friends.

He was preceded in death by one brother; maternal grandfather, Willie Hoke; and grandmother, Bertha Pullom; and his paternal grandparents, Jefferson "Pete" and Mable Malone.
