Sgt. Peek was captured at Cumberland Gap on Sept. 9, 1863 and received at the Military Prison in Louisville, KY. On Sept. 24, 1863, he was transferred to Camp Douglas, IL and received there Sept. 26, along with other prisoners of war. On Oct. 21, 1864, Sgt. Peek died of dysentery while still held prisoner at Camp Douglas. He was buried in Grave 96, Block 2 of the Chicago City Cemetery. His remains, and those of thousands of other Confederate prisoners, were moved between 1865-1867 to a lot ("Confederate Mound") within Oak Woods Cemetery selected for this purpose.
