Solander moved to England from Sweden in 1760 and intoduced English botanists to the Linnaean system. He was appointed Assistant Librarian cataloguing the natural history collections at the British Museum. He accompanied Joseph Banks on Cook's voyage in the Endeavor between 1768-71 and then accompanied Banks to Iceland in 1772. Solander was Secretary and Librarian to Banks (1772-3) and Keeper of the Natural History Department of the British Museum (1773-82).
