Burleigh fought in the American Civil War and was twice sentenced to death but each time he escaped. He was a correspondent for Central News during the Egyptian campaign in 1882 and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. During the next phase of the Egyptian campaign he was a correspondent for the "Daily Telegraph" and remained with this paper until his death. He also covered the Ashanti expedition, the Atbara expedition, the Egyptian War (1896-98), the Boer War (1899-1902) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5).
