Prominentagnostic, radical journalist, writer, poet and publisher. As asecularist Ross was associated with Charles Bradlaugh until they disagreed over the promotion of birth control. Ross used the name Saladin" for his articles in the "Secular Review" and the "Agnostic Journal". In the 1870s he founded his own publishing business which he called William Stewart & Co.
