Bernacchi was physicist to the Southern Cross Antarctic Expedition (1898-1900) and to the National Antarctic Expedition under Captain Robert F. Scott (1901-4). He travelled to British Namaqualand and German South West Africa (1905), the forests of Peru(1906), Central Borneo and other remote parts of the world. During the First World War he served in the anti-submarine division of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He wrote many books about his travels along with a biography of Captain Oates called "A Very Gallant Gentleman".
