Born on Jan. 26, 1934, in Moore County, Mrs. Killian was the daughter of the late Jimmie Thorne Lucas and Lessie Lee Lucas, formerly of Lucas Road in West End. She married her late husband, Robert J. Killian, in 1961.

Selected to Who's Who Among American University Students, Mrs. Killian received an undergraduate degree from East Carolina University in 1956. She earned a master of arts degree in teaching from Duke University in 1961. She completed further advanced graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her teaching career began at Page Senior High School in Greensboro. She next taught students at Greensboro College for several years as an associate professor of English. Her 12-years of working with students at Guilford College led her to create a unique course for adults returning to school called Adult Transitions. The program was an interdisciplinary course now taught at many college sand universities.

For the last several years before Mrs. Killian's retirement in 1999, she taught Adult Transitions and served as associate director of admissions for the adult admissions office at UNCG. She continued teaching the course she created until the fall of 2003. For Mrs. Killian, teaching and working with students was both an avocation and a vocation. Active in church as well as a member of local and national organizations, Mrs. Killian taught confirmation classes, youth and adult Sunday School classes. She was elected the first president of the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a professional order for women in education, and had served for several years as scholarship chairperson for the Pilot Club of Greensboro, an organization for business and professional women. As a board of directors member of the Interfaith Council of Greensboro, Mrs. Killian directed the countywide high school essay contest. Enabling students to succeed in life and academically was only one of the varied jobs and pleasures for Mrs. Killian. Butterflies, birds and wild and domestic flowers, trees, the sea, the mountains all brought joy to her.
