Thomas was given the nickname of "Dutch" in early years and it was a name he was commonly called in the Ladora/Genoa Bluffs area.

Dutch had a cream route in the neighborhood around Genoa Bluffs and hauled the cream to the butter factory in Genoa Bluffs. Each morning he ran his route with a team of horses and a wagon. He picked up the neighborhood children as he picked up the cream and dropped the children off at the country school on his way back to the butter factory.

At the time of his death, he had 19 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Mr. Tanner spent the major portion of his life around and in Ladora, however, he spent the last six months with his daughter and son-in-law in Illinois.
