He was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Muscatine, the son of Frank C. and Mattie Marie Brown Martin. He married Viola Creamer in 1941. They later divorced. He married Loretta Armstrong on June 27, 1956, in Kahoka, Mo.
He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe as part of Company H of the 414th Infantry Regiment. He earned the rank of sergeant and was a squad leader. Some of his citations and decorations included the Silver Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the EAMET Ribbon.
He had served as a police officer for the City of Muscatine for eight years and as a deputy sheriff under Sheriff Charles Anson for 10 years. He managed the Trailways Bus Depot, was a supervisor at H.J. Heinz Co. and retired as a security guard for Oscar Mayer in 1983, after 14 years of service.
He was a member of American Legion Post 27 and a past member of the Moose.
He enjoyed hunting and loved working around the home and in the yard. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta; six sons, Mike Jr. and wife Marge of South Sioux City, Neb., Thomas A. Martin of Santa Maria, Calif., Jerry S. Martin and wife Connie of Illinois City, Ill., Steven P. Martin and wife Denise of Naperville, Ill., and Alan P. Martin and Jeffrey W. Martin, both of Muscatine; two daughters, Cheryl Bendele and husband Paul of Santa Maria and Patricia A. Kline and husband Mike of Lone Tree; two sisters, Elaine Diller of Muscatine and Gloria Nietzel of Idaho; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David; and an infant daughter, Linda Lou Martin.
