James was 25 and a New Castle County, DE, farmer when he enlisted with Capt. Harper on Aug. 9, 1862.

He was 5'61/2" with blue eyes and dark hair.

Served as a Corporal with the 4th Delaware Regiment, Company E during the Civil War.

James died of tuberculosis.

Son of William and Elizabeth (Jones) Harkness.
