Civil War Veteran who was a Captain in Company G, 35th North Carolina Infantry. He enlisted on May 15, 1861 as a private in the "Henderson Rifles" (Company C, 25th North Carolina Regiment.) He was elected to be Captain of Company G, 35th North Carolina Regiment which was part of Ransom's Brigade. He was killed at the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) in Maryland on September 17, 1862. [The death year on the headstone is obviously not correct.] His body was returned to Henderson County for burial by his slave/servant, George Mills.
He was the son of William Bryson of Hendersonville and a graduate of the South Carolina Medical College in Charleston.
