Wenatchee World - Apr 3, 1997

Nellie May (Barker) Stringham, age 91, of Garden Terrace, died April 1, 1997, of cancer and other complications.

She was born May 2, 1905, in Mentor, Minn., to Rufus I. Barker and Jessie Van Gordon Barker. In 1908, the Barkers moved to Cove, Ore., where Nellie grew up. After attending Oregon Normal School in Monmouth, Ore., she taught school in Cove.

Nellie married Keller Dean Stringham in Cove in 1924. They farmed there, in Enterprise and in Imbler, Ore., before returning in 1936 to settle in Enterprise where they raised their family. In 1959 they moved to Wenatchee where Keller died in 1961 after an extended illness. In 1972 Nellie moved into Garden Terrace and was one of their longest time residents.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she found many enduring friendships. She enjoyed studying genealogy and working in the library. She loved traveling, church related trips and visiting her daughters in Texas. Nellie particularly enjoyed driving around the scenic areas here in the Northwest with friends and with her children. She loved nature, reading, classical music and working crossword puzzles -- Nellie was rarely seen without her puzzle book and pencil.

She is survived by her three children, Robert Dean Stringham of Ellensburg, Mrs. Marilyn Dickens of Huntington-Zavalla, Texas, and Mrs. Mary Ann Dean of Houston, Texas and Wenatchee; three grandchildren, Mrs. Sue Williams of Yakima, Mrs. Holly Mock of Ellensburg and Larry Dickens of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Lura Hyde and Mrs. Dorothy Young, both of Eugene, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Raymond W. Barker, Guy E. Barker, Herbert Barker and Gordon Barker; and three sisters, Amy Ruth Barker, Jessie Daniels and Berta J. Weldy.

Services are under the care of Betts Funeral Service, Wenatchee.
