Carrie Frances Marie Wilken Hawks was born on Oct. 27, 1889, in Danforth, Ill. to John D. and Anna Tobia Schroeder Wilken. She died September 28, 1997 at the Heritage Nursing Home in Geneva, at the age of 107 years, 11 months and 1 day.
In 1890, the family moved to Bellwood where Carrie attended school and grew to adulthood. She was confirmed in the Rising City Lutheran church on March 27, 1904.
In 1906, when she was in the ninth grade she attended Fremont Normal college. The following year after graduating from the tenth grade she returned to Fremont Normal and graduated from there in August of 1907. She moved to Bruning and taught school at District 49 southeast of Bruning in the fall of 1907 and spring of 1908.
On October 14, 1908, she was married to Thomas A. Hawks. Two children, Dorothy and Fieldon, were born to this marriage.
Carrie and Tom lived on a farm near Carleton and Bruning until they retired and moved to a home in Bruning. Tom died October 7, 1977.
She was always active in the United Methodist church, doing various duties and she was a longtime member of the Federated Woman's Club of Bruning.
At the age of 99, she consolidated a lifetime of diaries and memories onto 24 legal pads in order to preserve her recollections of family history for her grandchildren. In 1994, a book was published from her writings with the assistance of her family and friends in honor of her 105th birthday.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Wilken; husband, Tom; daughter, Dorothy and son-in-law, Melvin Garrels; three great-grandchildren, Russell, Rebecca and Jennifer Garrels; brothers, George and wife Rose, Tobe and wife Minnie, Irvin and wives Stella and Mae; sisters, Grace Selby and husband Floyd and infant sister, Elizabeth.
She is survived by her son, Fieldon (Leona) Hawks of Bruning; grandchildren, Howard (Myrna) Hawks of Omaha, Leroy (Connie) Garrels of Friend, JoAnne (Don) Lubben of Bruning, Dennis (Helen) Garrels of Grand Island, Sharon (Eldon) Mulligan of Mesa, Ariz., Tom (HuLaine) Hawks of Bruning, sister-in-law, Pauline Hawks of Hebron, 19 great-grandchildren and spouses, 18 great-great grandchildren; two great-great-great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held from the United Methodist Church in Bruning on Oct. 2, with interment in the Bruning Public Cemetery.
