Son of Nathan O and Melissa A Russell, born near Carbon, Clay County, Indiana. Moved to Sullivan Count in 1893. Farmer. Enlisted in US Regular Army May 3, 1918 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Overseas in April 1918, assigned to Battery E, 18th Cavalry (Battery E, 76th Field Artillery) 3rd Division.

Wounded October 4, 1918 at Montfaucon, and died the same day. Burial in Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France.
